Improving your golf swing can be hard, particularly if you don’t know where to start. Producing an effective swing for a player is the best thing we can do. As a TPI certified professional, I recommend starting with an assessment to establish whether you might have limitations in mobility and/or stability.
Stability refers to the ability of a player to contain the centre of gravity within their base of support. Centre of gravity is at the centre of the spine at the sacrum level S2. Base of support is the bones/joints/muscles/ligaments that hold you up. This means that when your posture is shifted forward your centre of gravity shifts forward and in order to maintain stability you recruit normally unnecessary muscular tension to adapt to the shift. It is the shifting off centre which throws the golf swing out.
If you are not able to maintain your centre of gravity throughout your golf swing you will see a loss in power, specificity, and often suffer aches and pains after even short games. How do we know its a loss of stability that effects the golf swing? We assess it with golf specific testing protocols designed through TPI research and development which spends a chunk of time assessing PGA players to see how the top players stabilize to produce an effective swing.
There are a few key areas which need to be assessed, particularly the trunk. If your trunk (spine, pelvis, etc.) is not functionally stable it will show up in the assessment quite easily as it is designed to be golf specific.
Improving your stability is essential for excelling at any athletic endeavour, and golf is no exception. In my experience, stability can be improved through specific exercise protocols, chiropractic care, and swing drills. This helps to focus the player’s stability and mobility which they develop towards their golf game.
By improving the stability a player can create power with greater ease, have less fatigue, and improve their technique when they go to actually apply it. Having a stable foundation makes the big swing so much more effective and producing an effective swing is what we are all about.
